Cranial Osteopathy

cranial canyon Richard Metcalf Osteopathy in Sheffield WalkleyCranial osteopathy is a very gentle, accurate and deep form of osteopathic treatment which is suitable people of all ages from youngsters to the very elderly.  These might be acute or chronic problems which reside in any part of the body, and that does include the head.

Because it is so gentle the patient can usually not feel anything at all and will commonly say to me that they didn’t know what I did but they feel so much better.  However, this does not mean that nothing has been achieved and often the benefits can be felt immediately after the treatment or felt several days later. After a treatment the patient might feel unusually tired or, conversely, very energetic.

Personal preference

For many years, my preferred approach to promote healing and provide relief is through cranial osteopathy which is a form of manipulation but no force is applied.  It accurately works on problem areas and effectively applies and encompasses the unique principles of osteopathy.

Involuntary movement

The approach is based on ‘involuntary movement’ – the subtle shape change and rhythmical motion that is present in every type of tissue in the body. It takes many years for an osteopath to develop the necessary skills to work with the ‘involuntary movement’ in tissues such as muscles; ligaments; organs; the brain and spinal cord; and bones (including the cranial bones).

Accumulation of stress in the body

The effects of past traumas, stressful physical or emotional events and environmental factors can accumulate over time. Gradually the body may find it increasingly difficult to deal with these effects, and symptoms may start to show.

By working with and harnessing the ‘involuntary movement’, longstanding as well as more recent stresses and strains can be identified and relieved. This can remove the cause of the patient’s symptoms.
